Dhaka: A total of 51 Bangladeshi citizens, who were stranded in Japan due to the ban on passenger flights in the aftermath of the coronavirus outbreak, have returned to Dhaka on a special Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight yesterday night.

"A chartered flight of Biman carrying the Bangladesh nationals landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 11:30pm on Tuesday," Group Captain AHM Touhid-ul Ahsan, director of HSIA, told The Daily Star in a WhatsApp message.

Earlier yesterday, 109 Japanese citizens who were stranded in Bangladesh left Dhaka for Narita in Tokyo by a special flight of Biman.

On the special return flight, Biman brought back the 51 Bangladeshis from Japan.

The national flag carrier will operate another special flight from Japan on April 30 to bring back more Bangladeshi citizens from the Asian country, said Tahera Khandaker, deputy general manager (public relations) of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

The airline is also scheduled to operate three special flights from Kolkaka, Delhi and Mumbai on May 1, 2 and 3 respectively to bring back stranded Bangladeshi nationals in India.
