As COVID-19 cases remain unchecked in the Maldives, authorities on Friday have announced further restrictions, putting five islands under curfew, reported Raajje TV. The measures came after the archipelago over 700 daily cases on Thursday.

The curfew will take effect between 4 pm and 4 am every day from Friday, across Naifaru island in Lhaviyani atoll, Maafushi island in Kaafu atoll, Eydhafushi island in Baa atoll, and Mathiveri and Ukulhas islands in Alif Alif atoll.

The country’s Health Protection Agency- the main body responsible for handling the COVID-19 crisis- has also banned the gathering of people, parties among other activities. Gyms, schools, and saloons have been ordered to close.

Male, the archipelago’s capital is already under restrictions. Most infections are being reported from this region. Health experts have earlier warned the country about the situation going out of control.

Over 80 percent of ICUs beds are already occupied in Male. And, hospitals may run out of beds. For the first time since the pandemic, the country reported seven deaths in the last 24 hours. Over 7000 people are still Covid positive in the country.
