India’s Border Security Force (BSF) has arrested a Bangladeshi inspector, who allegedly crossed the border into India illegally, in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal state. Dhaka Metropolitan Police confirmed his arrest and said they were trying to bring him back.

Mohammad Sheikh Sonel Rana, 46, posted at Dhaka’s Benani Police Station as Inspector (investigation), was arrested in Changrabandha, a transit route to Bangladesh.

A report in Telegraph India, citing BSF sources, said he planned to go to Kathmandu, Nepal, and was carrying four debit cards, some US dollars and Euros, and two phones with Bangladeshi SIM cards.

The report also claimed he was among 21 other Bangladesh Police personnel under the radar of the BSF since 2008 for "some reasons". The BSF later handed him over to Mekhliganj police station in Cooch Behar.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Shafiqul Islam, speaking to The Daily Star, said, "We are trying to bring him back, as he is an accused in a case here (in Bangladesh)," while also admitting it won’t be easy to bring him back till the completion of trial in India.

Dhaka Police also confirmed that he left Bangladesh without informing the department. The report also claimed he was reportedly involved in running a company named E-Orange and police had received a complaint against him by a customer.
