Authorities in Bangladesh have started the second phase of the COVID-19 vaccination drive, reported bdnews. The country has already administered the first doses of vaccines to 5.5 million people starting from February 7.

COVID-19 cases are surging rapidly in Bangladesh with over 7000 cases being reported daily now. The country had to impose a weeklong lockdown to slow down the pace. The government seems aware of the tough time ahead.

“We are witnessing a blow,” said Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. “Although we have taken some steps, and we have to take tougher steps to save the lives of people,” she added.

Under the second phase, people who have already received the first dose will get the second shot, while the rest of the people will receive the first dose. Automated text messages are being sent to people, informing them about scheduled second doses of vaccines.

"Many of those who took the first shot on Jan 26-27 on trial will also receive the second shot. Those who have never received a text message for the second dose can go to the same center for vaccination,” MD Shamsul Haq, Bangladesh’s director-general of health services, was quoted as saying by bdnews.
