On the eve of the beginning of the relocation of Rohingyas from Cox’s Bazar to Bhashan Char, the United Nations reiterated its offer to engage with the process subject to technical and protection assessments of the island to be carried out by independent experts.

If the global body is engaged operationally, further work will be needed to develop plans and budgets in consultations with the government, national and international NGOs, and the donors.

“The United Nations is aware of reports that the Government of Bangladesh may begin the initial movements of Rohingya refugees from Cox’s Bazar to Bhasan Char in the Bay of Bengal in the coming days,” said a statement issued by the UN Bangladesh on Wednesday morning.
