The Sri Lankan government has dubbed a resolution presented in the US House of Representatives calling for a political solution in Sri Lanka  as one influenced by the LTTE sympathizers in the US to carry forward the separatist agenda.

Issuing a statement, the Sri Lankan foreign ministry referred to the Resolution No. H.RES.413 introduced in the United States House of Representatives by five Representatives and said the island nation was “vehemently” opposed to it.

“The government of Sri Lanka vehemently opposes the contents of the said Resolution which contains allegations that are unsubstantiated, and have unfounded and blatant lies raising grave suspicions on the intention of the Resolution,” the statement said.

“Considering the inaccurate, biased and one sided nature of the proposed resolution, it may be noted that this is not a mere human rights resolution, but appears to be one influenced by a coterie of sympathisers of the LTTE in the US Congress, to carry forward the separatist agenda of the LTTE, which is proscribed as a terrorist organization in 32 countries including the USA.”

It is reported that the Resolution has been referred to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on 18 May 2021, ColomboPage reported.

The Sri Lankan government is in the process of submitting its response through the Sri Lanka Embassy in Washington. to representatives of the House foreign affairs committee and House sub-Committee on Asia and the US Embassy in Colombo.

The resolution calls for honoring the lives lost in the  civil war in Sri Lanka, and “expresses support for justice, accountability, reconciliation, reconstruction, reparation, and reform in Sri Lanka to ensure a lasting peaceful political solution and a prosperous future for all people of” the island nation.

The decades-old civil war ended in Sri Lanka on May 18, 2009, when its army crushed the terror outfit Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) - which had carried out a violent movement seeking a homeland for the Tamils in the island - with the killing of the organisation's supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran.
