Colombo (ECONOMYNEXT): The number of confirmed cases of COVID19 in Sri Lanka rose to129 today as seven more cases were reported officials said.

According to the government’s Health Promotion Bureau, the total number of detected cases is 129, with seven new cases. The number under observation is 173 and 16 people have been discharged after a full recovery. The second death from the disease occurred yesterday at the District General Hospital in Negombo.

The 64-year old victim was described as a person with respiratory and cardiac ailments.

Officials said that the victim had been to Jaffna for a wedding before he became ill. He had sought treatment from a physician and thereafter at a private hospital before being rushed to the government hospital.

Doctors had performed the PCR test to check whether he had COVID19 shortly before he had passed away.

Today Public Health Officials and Police placed his family under quarantine in their homes. Officials said that the deceased man’s family had eleven members.

The man’s remains had been cremated at the Public cemetery Monday night.

Muslim leaders condemned the cremation as it is against Islamic tenets.(Colombo, March 31, 2020) – Arjuna Ranawana
