Sajith Premadasa, the leader of opposition in Sri Lanka, asked the Sri Lankan government to get its priorities right, suggesting they should focus more on spending money on treating Covid-19 rather than on purchasing new helicopters from Russia.

At a time when the country has been hit hard by the new Covid-19 wave, Sajith said the government should not waste money on purchasing new helicopters, reported Daily Mirror.

“This is not the time to implement such a project. We accept that country’s security is important but the country is in need of more ICU beds and other medical equipment,” Sajith was quoted as saying by Daily Mirror.

He also raised objection to the government proposal to spend over $300,000 on building gymnasiums across the country.

Amid surging cases, he said, the country would soon require more beds and other necessary supplies. “Dengue fever, too, is spreading including COVID- 19, though no one is speaking about it. There are also a number of non -committal diseases in Sri Lanka,” he added further.

He also said he has had meetings with several foreign diplomats and told them that the island nation would require their assistance in tackling the pandemic.
