The Pakistan government is making efforts to host a high-level peace meeting in Pakistan between the top Afghan leaders from both the Taliban and the government, reported TOLOnews.

The development came after Pakistan Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa visited Afghanistan earlier this month and met Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. The report, citing sources from both the Afghan President Office and the High Council for National Reconciliation, claimed that talks on a possible meet are still going on.

The Taliban, however, denied being aware of any such proposal. Significantly, a high-level delegation of the Taliban leadership just returned to Doha, Qatar, after camping in Pakistan for almost a month.

Reports claimed that the Taliban held discussions with Pakistan military leaders there. However, experts claim that the Taliban are unlikely to agree on holding a peace meeting with Afghan officials in Pakistan. The insurgent group has consistently tried to project itself as an independent entity, not under the influence of Pakistan. And, any such meeting in the country could contradict that perception.

Earlier, when it showed its conditional interest to attend the Turkey conference, the group said the end negotiation must be held in Doha.

Meanwhile, in Doha, the representatives of the Afghan government and the Taliban have twice in recent days but made no headway in talks.
