Pakistan seeks specific actions from India with respect to the situation in Jammu and Kashmir to normalize the bilateral relations, a report in Al Jazeera said. However, according to the report, Pakistan didn’t seek restoration of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution that conferred ‘special status’ on Jammu & Kashmir. 

Steps to ease lives in Kashmir, halting the demographic change in the region are among other steps that Islamabad seeks before restarting talks with India. 

“Pakistan is genuinely standing with the Kashmir cause, of course, the territory is an internationally recognized dispute, but the first thing we have to do is make sure Kashmiri lives are eased,” Al Jazeera quoted a Pakistani official who claimed to be aware of secret talks between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

Other conditions include the removal of communication blockade in the valley, freeing all political prisoners in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, and restoration of the statehood to Kashmir.

The officials claimed these are the steps that would create an “enable atmosphere” for serious talks between the two nations.  

Earlier, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan reiterated a couple of times that India should take the first step forward to make enabling atmosphere for talks. However, Khan never specifically publicly pointed out steps Islamabad sought for these purposes. 

Earlier this year, the secret talks between India and Pakistan, which are believed to have mediated by the UAE, resulted in the release of a joint statement, calling for the strict observance of the 2003 ceasefire understanding. 

Later, both, the Pakistan Army Chief and Prime Minister Imran Khan gave statements desiring peace and cordial ties with India. Thereafter, the prime ministers of both, too, had exchanged letters-- the first time in years.
