The Pakistan government will present today a full inquiry report of the train collision accident that happened on Tuesday in Ghotki region of Sindh province that killed at least 65 people by Tuesday, reports say.

Officials responsible for the accident would be taken to task, said the country’s railway minister Azam Khan Swati. He said these accidents were taking place due to the negligence of railway officials and acknowledged the railway track of the Sukkur division was dilapidated.

The government has spent close to $128 million on installing a new signal system, he said, but the system had not been functional yet. The tracks are in need of replacement but sadly it could not be done, he added.

He also informed that he had taken the issue to Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan. “Should we wait for the ML-I to be executed by China under the CPEC or start track rehabilitation on our own will be decided on Wednesday,” He said.

Railway infrastructure requires big money for maintenance, and successive governments in Pakistan have paid little attention to it, possibly due to the country’s struggling economy. Trains accidents in the last two decades have become common in the country.
