To An Old Friendship

I think I knew who lived here once
And, I think, I knew him well,

Ashok Sawhny Jun 11, 2025

I think I knew who lived here once
And, I think, I knew him well,
I’m told he’s still around somewhere
But where, I can’t tell

For, Time’s taken its usual toll
And, he is not anymore the same,
Neither gait nor stride of old
For, it’s now a different game.

The gentle wind now too strong for me and him
‘Cause it feels like a stormy gale,
That’s how it all seems to me now
My friend too, perhaps, a bit frail.

Strange, that as I write these lines
I seem to now recollect clearly,
That, passing time has clouded over
The form that once was him and me.

Yes, I do remember well those times
When quarter miles felt like yards,
When Dipak Narang and the lesser me
Held those winning cards.

I speak of Dipak and myself, folks
And, say what the mirror tells me,
I am like Alice in Wonderland
Only, now not far from eternity.

I hope he too is “sprinting” well
The tape for us not far away,
Who will breast it first, alas
Only Time knows the state of play.
