In an apparent response to the finance ministry’s criticism of Fitch Ratings which downgraded the Maldives’s credit rating to ‘CCC’ from ‘B Negative,’  Maldives’s parliament speaker tweeted "we have to listen listen to international indicators".

Fitch Ratings on Thursday released its projection for the Indian Ocean archipelago which warned that the Maldives could default on its loan repayment obligations, slow recovery of tourism sectors, and growing debts. The projections led the finance ministry to issue statements criticizing the agency and refused to accept the downgrading.

Speaker Nasheed took to Twitter and adopted a mild approach in responding to the projection suggesting his government listen to international indicators, including Fitch Ratings.

Responding to Fitch projection of loan defaulting Nasheed said, “We will not default if we can restructure our external debt, especially to Chinese commercial institutions.” Nasheed expressed confidence over the recovery of tourism in the country.

On earlier occasions too, Nasheed asked his government to approach lenders and asked them to negotiate repayment schedule.
