In a major boost to its vaccination drive, Sri Lanka will receive one million doses of Moderna Covid-19 vaccines from the World Health Organization (WHO)’s COVAX facility by next month, m local media reports sayid.

The vaccines have been channeled by the United States as part of its global vaccine distribution plans through the WHO’s COVAX facilities, Channa Jayasumanna, the Sri Lanka state minister for production, manufacturing, and regulation of pharmaceutical,  said. 

Besides this, the US will also donate vaccines directly to Sri Lanka in the coming months.

The Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, codenamed MRNA1273, is a COVID-19 vaccine developed by Moderna, the United States National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority. 

The minister also said that the country would use all vaccines approved by the WHO. So far, it used Astra-Zeneca-Oxford, Chinese Sinopharm, and Russia’s Sputnik-V vaccines
