In a rare move a joint delegation of Indian and Afghan Islamic scholars denounced the Taliban’s violence, calling the war by the insurgent group “illegitimate” and without any Islamic justification. They also called for an "immediate ceasefire" in Afghanistan.

Islam is a religion of peace, and it urges unity among the Muslims, said a statement released on Thursday by the Afghan foreign ministry. The meeting of scholars was held in New Delhi on Wednesday. The delegation also declared the targeting of civilian infrastructure by the insurgent group goes against the teachings of Islam.

Clerics urged the Taliban and the Afghan government to rise to the occasion and seize the rare opportunity to establish a just and lasting peace in the country. The delegation also noted the progress Afghanistan has made in the last 20 years. These hard-gain achievements must be preserved, they said.

All religious scholars and people must come forward and should extend their support for the peace process, they said in a statement.

For months, the Afghan government has been reaching to Islamic scholars across the world. The aim of the condemnation by Islamic scholars is what the government says to delegitimize the Taliban’s Islamic reasoning for the continuation of the war.

Earlier, clerics from Qatar, Kuwait, Malaysia, and other countries had denounced the Taliban’s continued violence.
