Five Bangladeshi nationals were held in Jhenaidah district of Bangladesh by the personnel of the Bangladesh Border Guards (BGB) for illegally crossing into the country from India.

The arrests came after the country’s border police received a tip-off following which a search operation was launched in the area to nab people, Mohammad Nazrul Islam Khan, assistant director of BGB Maheshpur-58 Battalion,  was quoted as saying by The Daily Star.

Illegal crossing from India to border districts in Bangladesh--which has increased in recent months following border restrictions--has been the main reason for the Covid-surge in several of these districts.

Significantly, at least 17 border districts in Bangladesh are high-risk districts and are reporting over a 30 percent positive rate of coronavirus infection.
