Pakistan will have an e-passport system by this June this year, Sheikh Rashid, the country’s minister for interior said. A German company has been contracted for the implementation of the project, reported Dawn.

Currently, passport seekers in Pakistan sometimes take a year time to get it. However, these long delays may soon become history now.

“I assure you that this [e-passport] service would be available by June [2021]. After that, you would not hear any complaints or year-long delays for minor work,” Rashid said on Friday.

A German company has been hired for this project and it would be a major relief for all those seeking speedy service by the passport office, he added.

For the promotion of tourism in the country, Rashid said, the government has now been issuing e-visa to 192 countries. In the last few months, the country received over 300,000 visa applications; among them, only 12000 were rejected.

He claimed it was now easier to get a Pakistani visa.
