Dhaka: Nine more people have died from the novel coronavirus, taking the total count to 84 in the 24 hours to 8am on Saturday.

The number of infections crossed 2,000 after 306 new cases were detected in the same period, IEDCR Director Meerjady Sabrina Flora said on Saturday.

The tally of confirmed cases in Bangladesh currently stands at 2,144.

Globally, more than 2.23 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus and 151,657 have died, according to a Reuters tally. Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.

A total of 2,114 samples were tested in the last 24 hours while another eight patients recovered during that period, taking the tally of recoveries to 66, said Flora.

Among the infected, 564 are being treated in hospitals. The rest are isolating at home under the guidance of DGHS and IEDCR officials, according to the IEDCR director. “Of the infected patients, 11 are in intensive care but the others are quite stable.”

According to government data, 27 percent of those infected in the past 24 hours were aged between 21 and 30, 22 percent between 31 and 40 while 19 percent were aged between 41 and 50.

Among the deceased, four were above the age of 60, one was aged between 51 and 60, two between 41 and 50 and another between 31 and 40. Dhaka again led the country with six deaths while two died in Narayanganj and another in Savar.
