As the Everest base camp in Nepal reported several Covid-19 cases, China has decided to create a “line of separation” at the summit to prevent climbers from COVID-19 hit Nepal from mingling with those from the Chinese side.

According to Chinese state media, a group of 21 Chinese nationals is en route to the summit on the Tibetan side. They will set up the "line of separation" at the summit to stop contact between mountaineers from both sides of the peak.

However, it is not yet clear how China would enforce this line. The summit is a tiny, perilous, and inhospitable area of the size of a dining table.

In the last few weeks, authorities in Nepal had to evacuate multiple mountaineers as they started showing Covid-19 symptoms. The entire base camp was converted into isolation zones, and people from different camps were not allowed to mingle with each other.

However, despite rising cases, authorities in Nepal have not yet called off the season. While China has been reporting hardly 10 cases a day, mostly foreigners. Cases in Nepal, on the other hand, are on rising.
