Two construction groups from China have initiated reconstruct and build two quarantine facilities in the Maldives.

This was revealed by the Chinese Ambassador  Zhang Lizhong via Twitter on Monday morning,

As such, the two construction groups are the China State Construction and Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG).

The ambassador noted that China State Construction took up this initiative after a request by the Maldivian government. As such, the company has decided to send over 100 workers along with equipment and materials required to build a temporary quarantine facility.

This facility will have a maximum capacity of 800 individuals, said Lizhong.

In a separate Tweet, the ambassador noted that BUCG has also decided to arrange a task force of 40 workers to help renovate a two-story building in Hulhumalé. The workers will construct the building into a quarantine facility with the capacity of 327 beds.

This comes at a time the Minister of Health, Abdulla Ameen has noted that the authorities may need to quarantine individuals at home, due to the lack of facilities currently. The number of confirmed cases in the Maldives have been spiking since the discovery of a community transmission in the Maldives capital, on April 15.

As of Monday afternoon, there have been a total of 214 cases in the Maldives with over 2,000 contacts.
