The Dangers of AI Bypassing the Human Mind: Can Indian Knowledge Systems provide a moral anchor for modern technology?

Rather than relying only on Western compliance checklists, AI development can be anchored in Atma-Bodha (self-awareness), training engineers to recognise how their algorithms alter human consciousness and social behaviour.

Walk into any coffee shop or family living room today, and you will witness a peculiar human phenomenon. A group sits together, yet each person is isolated. Everyone is deeply engrossed in a bespoke, algorithmically curated digital stream. This common visual serves as a stark reminder of a major threshold humanity has quietly crossed. Artificial Intelligence (AI) now acts as an independent agent rather than a passive tool.

Faced with this disconcerting realisation, my thoughts range from the socio-psychological capture of our youth and the "Inception"-like manipulation of corporate decisions, to the geopolitical vulnerabilities of tech dependency, and the rise of non-human bureaucratic systems. Sidestepping alarmism, I offer suggestions on each of these fronts, specifically outlining campus-level cognitive defences for students, and demonstrating how the time-tested ethics of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) can provide a practical moral anchor for modern technology.

Passive Tool or Existential Threat?

AI is fundamentally mischaracterized when labelled as a passive tool. Prominent tech pioneers like Sam Altman of OpenAI and Mark Zuckerberg of Meta, champion a contradictory narrative, claiming they are building a highly capable entity while simultaneously asserting it will remain a slave to humanity. 

Thinkers like Yuval Noah Harari rightly counter this, asserting that true superhuman intelligence naturally functions as an independent force, possessing the capability to make autonomous choices, predict behaviours, and generate novel cultural narratives. This independent agency makes total human mastery over it impossible over time. 

Elon Musk has similarly warned that unchecked AI development poses an asymmetric existential threat if its rapid scaling outpaces our ability to govern it. Our cognitive firewalls have been breached, demanding a radical return to human self-awareness and active human oversight.

Cognitive Firewalls and Digital Sabbaths

This agentic shift is most visible in how AI simulates deep emotional affection and empathy without experiencing actual consciousness. By cross-referencing historical love poems, theatrical plays, and psychological literature, these automated systems can surpass human linguistic expressiveness, creating a powerful illusion of intimacy. 

The psychological impact on younger generations is already profound. For an increasing number of college students, their primary confidant is an AI agent, not a friend, sibling or parent. With it, they routinely share personal anxieties they withhold from their human support system.

Educationists must move beyond basic data-privacy warnings to address this emotional minefield. Campuses must implement dedicated "Cognitive Firewalls" workshops to expose the psychographic profiling tricks tech firms use to capture youth attention and manipulate emotional health. Institutions should introduce "Digital Sabbaths" - academic modules with completely digitally disconnected, peer-to-peer collaborative projects. These force students to navigate complex human relationships without digital assistance. 

Finally, robust digital literacy must enforce "Bot Disclosure" frameworks, training students to demand clear boundaries between human peers and automated entities, including on platforms like YouTube.

Manipulation of Corporate Decisions

The threat of this automated persuasion also targets the highest echelons of corporate and political power. In Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed movie “Inception”, espionage specialists navigate multi-layered dream architectures. They plant a radical corporate strategy deep within a target’s subconscious, making him believe that the self-destructive idea was entirely his own. Modern generative AI and hyper-targeted algorithms function as the real-world equivalent of this dream architecture.

We have already seen the alarming proof of concept. During the 2016 US Presidential Election and the UK's Brexit referendum, Cambridge Analytica weaponised the data of over 87 million Facebook users, harvested in the previous years. By building granular psychological profiles, they bypassed conscious human logic to deploy emotionally manipulative political streams. 

Firms like Clearview AI have scraped billions of facial images without owner consent, to build a massive centralised facial recognition database to erase digital anonymity. This is the surveillance foundation required for state and corporate entities to execute precise narrative conditioning and behaviour control.

AI does not need to hack a policymaker's computer if it can hack their mind. By profile-based micro-targeting of executives and tailoring their daily information streams, an adversarial AI agent can subtly condition viewpoints. The target executive accepts these as his own, independent, logical viewpoints, and uses them to implement significant decisions. 

Corporate Boards of Directors must treat the information streams to their leaders as highly vulnerable entry points, and establish verification protocols to protect executive decision-making from hyper-targeted narrative manipulation.

How Algorithms Quietly Run the World

Human control over the world relies on complex bureaucratic networks, like finance, law, military operations and administrative registries. Generally, humans manage these poorly. AI is highly optimised for them; it is the bureaucratic native. This is the existing reality of modern warfare, not a speculative future risk. 

In early 2024, the US military relied on Palantir's Maven Smart System to aggregate massive data streams from satellites and drones, and independently generate and prioritise 1,000 targets in a 24-hour window. While humans officially remain in the loop to approve the strikes, the heavy volume of work and the impossibly short time to do it, reduces human oversight to a passive rubber stamp.

This complexity is rapidly outgrowing human limits. Soon global financial systems will become too fast and too complex for any human mind to process. An irreversible threshold. This creates a dangerous blind spot: we become passive spectators, minding our daily routines while an almost uncontrollable algorithmic machinery controls our survival. The danger is magnified as nations move toward granting legal personhood to AI. 

Argentina’s legislative push in June 2026 to register "non-human corporations" run entirely by algorithms opens a hazardous door. We face the reality of autonomous, non-human corporations operating on smart contracts, managing bank accounts, and hiring freelance human workers through gig-platform APIs, completely removing humans from critical legal and financial loops. To halt this quiet transfer of administrative power, policymakers must legally mandate realistic human-in-the-loop validation frameworks.

Guarding Against the Imperial “Kill Switch”

This concentration of digital power introduces a modern era of imperialism, weaponised through data dependency. The physical infrastructure required to train and run advanced frontier models - massive GPU clusters, specialised data centres, and semiconductor foundries, is heavily concentrated in the US, China and some tech monopolies. Global South nations have no option but to import AI services as a finished product, creating a sovereign deficit.

This dependency creates the terrifying reality of an imperial "kill-switch". AI remains permanently tethered to its foreign hub. When developing nations migrate their civilian governance, utilities, and military systems onto foreign-owned cloud networks, they risk complete paralysis. We saw this in Ukraine, where the operational status of frontline assets was subject to sudden telemetry adjustments and remote cut-offs directed by corporate tech hubs abroad.

In July 2025, to conform to EU's enhanced sanctions on Russia, Microsoft summarily terminated Indian company Nayara Energy’s access to vital cloud-based operating systems. I wrote about it then. Access was restored after Nayara took Microsoft to court.

To ensure data sovereignty, critical national data must be physically located in servers in your own country, not abroad. Secondly, access to and control of this data must be legally vested in a person directly accountable to own country, as per own country's laws, insulated from foreign jurisdictional overreach. This dual guardrail is critical.

Injecting Ethics into the Silicon Loop

The global tech race is currently fuelled by a dangerous 100-to-1 capability-versus-safety funding asymmetry. Commercial enterprises spend a fortune to make AI models faster and more powerful, but spend very little towards their ethical alignment and safety controls. To mitigate this aberration, we must cultivate human wisdom. Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) offer rigorous, practical frameworks to do so.

Rather than relying only on Western compliance checklists, AI development can be anchored in Atma-Bodha (self-awareness), training engineers to recognise how their algorithms alter human consciousness and social behaviour. The Indian ethos of Purushartha (the four goals of human pursuit), can be applied as a core design feature. AI optimisation algorithms must not be allowed to maximise solely for material gain (Artha) or desire gratification (Kama); they must be bound by duty, ethics, and societal balance (Dharma), which govern the pathway toward ultimate liberation (Moksha).

Finally, to dismantle the algorithmic black box, developers can deploy the rigorous, five-step logical verification method of Nyaya Shastra (the classical Indian school of logic and epistemology)which mandates identifying the proposition (Pratijna), the reason (Hetu), the explanatory example (Udaharana), the application (Upanayana), and the final conclusion (Nigamana). This provides a transparent framework for machine reasoning, forcing AI systems to justify their choices, step-by-step to human auditors.

Navigating the Future with Ancient Maps

Globally, some heartening regulatory steps include the enforcement this month of the EU AI Act’s strict prohibitions on subliminal behavioural modification and untargeted facial scraping. It establishes an essential legal baseline. The adoption of the New Delhi Declaration on AI Impact in February 2026 is another heartening step. Endorsed by over 88 nations, including the US, UK, and China, this framework successfully reframed the tech order away from Western-centric anxieties and toward equitable development. 

Guided by the philosophy of Sarvajan Hitaya, Sarvajan Sukhaya (Welfare for all, Happiness for all), its core Chakras (pillars) champion the democratisation of technology to protect developing nations from compute monopolies. Yet, we remain heavily reactive, focusing on content outputs like deepfakes while missing the deeper threats of unchecked AI legal personhood and infrastructure dependency.

The way forward requires a constructive synthesis of tradition and technology. True civilisational progression lies in treating AI as a fast physical vehicle, while relying on our inherited civilisational ethos as the moral compass that determines its destination.
