Despite vibrant South Asian communities - like the one in Jackson Heights - flourishing across Queens and New York for decades, New York City has never elected a South Asian American city council member.

This year it's time for a change. Several South Asians are running for New York City Council in their respective districts.

IMPACT   is organizing on Tuesday, May 11 at 7:00 PM a virtual meet and greet with four South Asian candidates running to be NYC's first ever South Asian City Council Member.

They are — Felicia Singh (District 32), Shahana Hanif (District 39), Shekar Krishnan (District 25), and Jaslin Kaur (District 23). The four will be joined by special guests NY Senator Kevin Thomas and NY Assemblymember Jenifer Rajkumar.

"This is a unique opportunity for South Asian Americans to use our collective power and build representation at every level of our government, Neil Makhija, Executive Director, IMPACT stated (SAM).
