Bangladesh authorities have asked cricketers Shakib Al Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman to undergo a 14-day institutional quarantine at a hotel on their return after playing in the cash-rich Indian Premier League which has now been postponed due to an outbreak of Covid 19, bdnews24.com reported.

A top Bangladesh health official has turned down a request from the country’s cricket board to relax the rules for the two cricketers who are slated to take part in the One Day International home series against Sri Lanka from May 23.

ABM Khurshid Alam, director general of health services, said the rules cannot be relaxed for arrivals from India, which is facing a deadly second wave of the Coronavirus infection.

“We have the cabinet’s orders. If someone leaves (the quarantine centre), he will bear the responsibility for that. We’ve talked to the law-enforcing agencies as well. We will inform them about the matter,” Alam said.

All-rounder Shakib had been playing for Kolkata Knight Riders and pacer Mustafizur for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL T20 tournament.

The BCCI on Tuesday postponed the tournament after several players and support staff tested positive for the disease.
