Feb 01, 2022

Meet Sonam Wangchuk, a pioneering engineer and educationist who is changing the life of people in remote Ladakh, up in the Himalayas, with his innovative eco-friendly solutions. From devising ways to grow plants in the deserts to designing solar-heated mud buildings, Sonam Wangchuck, director of the Students' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh, is an inspiration to thousands of children who want to follow in his footsteps and do their bit in saving the environment. Ladakh is one of the world's most stunningly picturesque regions in India, home to towering mountains and deep valleys. While Ladakh has been in the global news for all the wrong reasons - as a conflict zone between India, Pakistan and China - what is not so well known is how Sonam Wangchuk has become a national inspiration with his visionary projects to reverse climate change. Wangchuk first came into the spotlight in 2009, when his story inspired the Bollywood Blockbuster "Three Idiots”. This is the story of how Sonam Wangchuk’s innovations include simple yet scalable methods that more people can take up for aiding our nature.
