Gloat not, O misfortune
Your triumphs are not eternal,
There is a Heaven close by
And your fire’s not infernal.

Autumn, when it alights upon
The glowing bed of flowers,
Knows well there are those
That withstand ravages and showers.

You are what sunsets are to sunrise,
Darkness before the light,
While the phantom from the east
Waits for the end of night.

Like winter and the freezing cold
That will succumb to spring,
You, too, will fall silent one day,
And the nightingale again sing.

You’re only part of destiny,
So there’s nothing there to fear,
We grieve a little, hope in the heart,
And shed a silent tear.

Then, hope springs a great surprise.
All things seem bright and gay,
As you are quietly laid to rest,
And the sun shines all the way. ‘

Never lose heart’ is an adage old
For nothing does ever last,
Misfortune, too, will one day, friends,
Be a thing of a long gone past.
