India's first rooftop drive-in cinema opens in Mumbai

India's first rooftop, open-air, drive-in theatre opened over the weekend in Mumbai, the country's entertainment capital. It can accommodate around 290 vehicles and is operated by PVR Ltd.

According to various media reports, the Jio Drive-in boasts of having one of the biggest cinema screens in the country with 24m x 10m dimensions in the heart of Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex. Located in Jio World Drive Mall, the Jio Drive-in will welcome moviegoers, who enjoy their favourite film from the comfort of their cars, with some delicious snacks on the side, the publicity brochure says.

India has been home to a few drive-in cinemas over the years in Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Gurugram, but these have found it tough to discover an audience so far because of the geographical and weather conditions.

The price of the ticket for each car is set to cost around ₹1,200 and only four people will be permitted inside one vehicle.

Jio World Drive CEO Darshan Mehta told news agency PTI that the drive-in theatre will be a "relatively safer open space" for those who want to experience the big-screen again after being confined to their homes because of the coronavirus pandemic. (SAM)
