Calling the country’s victory in the United Nations General Assembly presidential election “a proud accomplishment”, Maldives President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih said it showed the archipelago’s diplomatic efforts gained global recognition.

The remark came on Tuesday when Solih met his Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid who on 7 June scored a landslide victory in the presidential election for the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

This is "a step forward in elevating the country’s stature on the global stage”, Solih said while meeting with Shahid for the first time since his election to the UNGA president. It will “bring more success to the country,” he said.

Expressing confidence in Shahid and his future undertakings as the UNGA president, he commended him for his work “in astutely carrying out the Maldives' foreign policy.

Shahid thanked Solih’s foreign policy, crediting him for enhancing the trust of the international community in the Maldives, and also thanked the president for nominating him as the country’s candidate for the election.

The new innings will bring “abundant opportunities” for the Maldives, Shahid said, while assuring he would work towards achieving new development heights. Earlier, he termed Solih's presidency as “presidency of hope.”
