Sri Lanka has started issuing digital vaccination certificates to people who had received both doses of Covid vaccines. The smart vaccination certificate is a globally recognized system created by the Institute of Information and Communication Technology of Sri Lanka.

The new technology will help to show the world the accuracy of the vaccination program in the island nation, Sri Lanka's Ministry of Health said in a statement. As a first step, the digital vaccination cards will be distributed to Sri Lankan athletes traveling for the Tokyo Olympics, reported Colombopage.

Vaccinated people will be able to download the application from the Ministry of Health website for this internationally recognized Smart Digital Vaccine Certificate.

The certificate contains the name, age, identity card number, date of vaccination, type of vaccine, and batch number of the vaccine received by the cardholder.

Currently, Sri Lanka has been using mostly Chinese Sinoharm vaccines to inoculate its people. This week, the government confirmed that they had received enough Astra-Zeneca vaccines from an unnamed well-wisher to give the second dose to people who had earlier received the first dose.

Late in April, the supply of Astra-Zeneca vaccine from the Serum Institute of India was disrupted after the Indian government banned the export of vaccines.
