On the face of it, China’s Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress, which went into force on July 1, sounds rather anodyne. In reality though, it is being widely seen by its ethnic minorities, particularly Tibetans and Uyghurs, as a weapon to essentially erase their unique cultures. It has provisions that experts think Beijing could use to carry out repressive policies beyond its borders.
To understand the implications of the new law, Mayank Chhaya Reports spoke to Aparna Rawal, a Sofia, Bulgaria-based independent researcher and analyst specializing in counterterrorism and regional security who is the Co-Founder of The Strategic Perspective.
