Bangladesh is an independent, sovereign country and we decide our own foreign policy, said Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momin, in response to what seemed like a threatening comment by the Chinese envoy over Quad.

"We're an independent and sovereign state. We decide our foreign policy. But yes, any country can uphold its position," he told reporters on Tuesday,” Momin was quoted as saying by UNB.

Momin also said Dhaka maintains a non-aligned and balanced foreign policy and it will decide what to do according to those principles.

Earlier during a media interaction, Chinese ambassador to Dhaka Li Jiming, said,  "Obviously it will not be a good idea for Bangladesh to participate in this small club of four (Quad) because it will substantially damage our bilateral relationship.” The language used by the Chinese envoy was unusually threatening which irked Dhaka.

Li said Bangladesh would not derive any purpose from joining the anti-China block.

Momin also clarified that no one from Quad had so far approached Bangladesh.
