Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked state-owned enterprises to be self-reliant, and made it clear that the government would not allocate money in the upcoming days, reported The Daily Star.

The message came at a time when resources at the government disposal are already stretched. State-owned enterprises, including banks, Biman Bangladesh Airlines, and the country’s telecommunication authority, have been asked to manage their expenses through their incomes.

On Monday, Hasina chaired the 24th meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) virtually from her official Gono Bhaban residence.

“The Prime Minister instructed the state-owned companies to spend money from their income. No more funds will be allotted from the government funds in upcoming days," the country’s planning minister MA Manna quoted Hasina as saying.

During the meeting, Hasina also asked the authorities concerned to complete the construction work of the Super Specialised Hospital under Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) quickly.
