Maldives' State Trading Organization (STO) has chartered a flight of the country’s national airline, Maldivian, to carry essential supplies from China.

This was revealed by the organization on Twitter on Wednesday morning.

STO revealed that the flight carried Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as well as other essential medical supplies that are crucial in the country’s response against the COVID-19 pandemic.

This comes as part of China’s assistance towards Maldives COVID-19 response efforts, among several other means of aid including helping build two housing facilities, for foreign workers in need. China State Construction and Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG) are assisting in the work, following a request by Maldivian authorities.

This facility will have a maximum capacity of 800 individuals. BUCG has also decided to arrange a task force of 40 workers to help renovate a two-story building in Hulhumalé. The workers will construct the building into a quarantine facility with the capacity of 327 beds.

Several other countries have been extending support to the Maldivian government in their COVID-19 response efforts as well.
