As the pandemic ceases the island nation’s income, Maldives nears loan repayment deadlines. The country’s parliament speaker and former president, Nasheed, called for the restructuring of its debts without additional fines.

Taking to Twitter, Nasheed wrote, “Most of the loans will need to be paid from 2021-23, I believe that, based on the current situation, the wisest way is to restructure the debt of 2012-18 without additional fines.”

Earlier under the G-20’s Debt Service Suspension Initiative, China granted deferment in repayment of some of its loans directly taken by the government of Maldives. The Maldives government is also negotiating a similar deferment for other commercial loans taken from China.
