Bangladeshi expatriate beaten and stabbed in Paris, dies

A Bangladeshi expatriate died on Wednesday in a hospital in Paris, France, after he was beaten and stabbed by unknown people. The man was attacked last week on Saturday when he was returning from a restaurant where he had been working. Many Bangladeshi expats work in local restaurants as cooks and waiters and speak fluent French, while many have made their name as fruit vendors.

Sohel, who was living in Paris with his wife and a son, was returning home after work on Saturday morning when some people blocked his way and beat him up, The Daily Star of Bangladesh reported, citing the deceased’s family members who are in shock.

He was also stabbed multiple times following which he fell unconscious, the report claimed.
Paris police have already started an investigation into the incident and secured the CCTV footage of the incident. However, police are yet to find the motive behind the attack, which was suspected to be racial in nature.

The deceased, who was receiving treatment in a hospital in Paris, died on Wednesday. The Bangladeshi expatriate community living in France has conveyed their condolences and grief over his death. An estimated 10-15,000 Bangladeshi expats are living in France.

Beginning in early 2008, unprecedented numbers of Bangladeshi asylum seekers entered France in search of improved economic prospects. Over the years, Bangladesh has become one of the most important sending countries of asylum seekers to France, according to a Springer paper published in springer.com.
