Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he was confident Sri Lanka will address the issues of the Tamils. "I am confident that the Government of Sri Lanka will realize the expectations of the Tamil people for equality, justice, peace, and respect within a united Sri Lanka," Modi said in a press statement.

"India has been a trusted partner in Sri Lanka's development efforts. The new Lines of Credit announced last year will give more strength to our development cooperation. We are happy that the Indian Housing Project for the construction of more than 48,000 houses for internally displaced people in the northern and eastern region of Sri Lanka has been completed," he said.

The two leaders discussed about Joint Economic Projects in Sri Lanka, and also on enhancing economic, business, and investment relations.

Modi said that they discussed about increasing People-to-People connectivity, promoting tourism, and improving connectivity and that the recent direct flight between Chennai and Jaffna was part of efforts in this direction.

"Terrorism is a major danger in our region. We both countries have fought this problem firmly... in our conversation today, we discussed furthering our cooperation against terrorism," he said.

Rajapaksa thanked Prime Minister Modi for his Government’s “Neighborhood First” policy and the priority that he attaches to relations with Sri Lanka, the Colombo Gazette reported.

“We agreed that our cooperation is multi-faceted, with priority given to a number of areas, including security, economic, cultural and social sectors. A part of our discussions centered on co-operation in regard to the security of our two countries. India has always assisted Sri Lanka to enhance our capabilities in intelligence and counter-terrorism, and we look forward to continued support in this regard,” Rajapaksa said.
