Colombo: Sri Lanka’s transport ministry has announced that 5000 buses and 400 trains will be deployed for public transport services from Monday.

The announcement came days after the government signalled its intention to resume services, with the country continuing its fight against the coronavirus.

The move has come under fire by unions and the opposition which cite this as a move to conduct the general election.

On Thursday, the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce called on the government to implement a proper transport plan with the state sector set to resume operations in the coming days.

Schools and universities are set to re-open on May 11 while a decision on resuming state sector services is yet to be finalized.
