Bangladesh has exported 1,875 tons of ilish - the fish that is at the heart of gourmet dishes among Bengalis on both sides - to India through Benapole land port ahead of Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community.

Sharsha upazila Fisheries Officer Abul Hasan said the Commerce Ministry permitted 13 ilish exporters to export 1,875 tons of ilish to India by October 10.

On Thursday, a consignment of 197 tons of hilsa was exported to India. With this, a total of 1,875 tons of ilish have been exported to India ahead of Durga Puja, he added.
