Commonwealth to assist Maldives in strengthening elections process

MALE: The Commonwealth has offered to assist Maldives to strengthen its elections process, Attorney General Dr. Hassan Saeed said on Sept 6.

This offer comes in the wake of Secretary General Don McKinnon’s call to President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in which McKinnon reiterated Commonwealth’s support to strengthen the political system of the Maldives.

“We have forwarded our recommendations. We are expecting a report back” from the Commonwealth secretariat,” Saeed said.

Among the amendments that are to be brought include doing away with the loopholes in the regulations regarding elections. Efforts will also be made to decrease influence of monetary power over elections. Effective campaigning processes will be emphasized among the amendments.
