    Bangladesh officials lack IT knowledge

DHAKA: Most Bangladesh officials have little knowledge of information technology and are unfamiliar with the country's e-governance initiative even two years after its launch, reports Xinhua.

Only 28 percent government officials and 29 percent employees can operate computer and other IT facilities despite huge spending on the project, according to a recent study presented at a meeting of the executive committee of National Taskforce on Information and Communication Technologies.

The e-governance project, with a budget of $13.62 million, was approved by the National Economic Council two years ago to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, transparency and accountability of the government, said the Financial Express daily.

Facilities like e-mail, file tracking, document sharing, web portal, paperless solutions, group decision support system and video conferencing were introduced in several ministries.

A full-fledged training programme was also included, but it failed to bring a sizeable number of officials into the project.
