DHAKA: One person was killed and seven injured in a bomb attack in Bangladesh Friday (Dec 10), police said.

The attack, at a market in Jhenaidah district 228 km from here, claimed the life of a union parishad - the second lowest tier of local government - member.

Police and eyewitnesses said a gang of 10-12 assailants exploded a series of bombs at Charkol Bazar, killing Shafiuddin, 40, and injuring seven.

Shafiuddin was elected a member of the Madhuhati Union Parishad last year and he was also the president of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party branch in his union Parishad. A union parishad comprises several villages.

Jhenaidah police chief M. Akram Hossain said the attackers, who could not be identified as they covered themselves while running away from the scene.

The motive for the attack could not be immediately ascertained, Hossain said.
