Failure of Indian intelligence: The buck stops nowhere
Almost a dozen state police units and intelligence agencies were tracking down terrorist groups across India for the past two years but missed to detect the activities of the men who were involved in the Mumbai terror attack. Though there were reports, based mainly on the interrogation of terrorists arrested in the recent past, about Mumbai being the next target, there were no specific leads about how the terrorists will strike.
US attacks could have serious implications for Pakistan
Three days before Pakistan elected its 14th president, on Sep 3, at 3 a.m., two CH-47 Chinook transport helicopters landed in the village of Zawlolai in South Waziristan with ground troops from the US Special Forces. The troops fired at three houses and killed over 17, including five women and four sleeping children.
President Asif Ali Zardari: Can he measure up to the challenges?
Asif Ali Zardari, 53, the 12th President of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, is not new to politics, nor is he to the Machiavellian twists and turns necessary to survive in the intensely fratricidal politics of Pakistan where the final shots are called by the Chief of Army Staff. The dexterity and craftiness with which Zardari marginalised his main political rival, Nawaz Sharif, without losing the grip over the fledgling coalition government, and then President Pervez Musharraf, without upsetting the Army, give credit to his innate political sense and ability.
Serial blasts expose loose ends in security management
The recent serial bombings in India's two major cities, Bengalaru (or Bangalore, the capital city of Karnataka) and Ahmedabad (Gujarat) in July, indicate a phenomenal growth in the number of Indian Muslims willing to take part in, or abet, acts of terror. The 16 blasts in Ahmedabad, as well as the discovery of 22 live bombs with integrated circuits from the 'diamond city' of Surat, clearly show the involvement of a large network of local men, and perhaps women, in aiding the coalition of terror networks that had been carrying out attacks in different places in India over the past three years.
