PM's grant for Indian studies in Beijing varsity

Beijing, January 13 (IANS): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Sunday announced a grant of Rs.7.5 million to the Institute of Indian Studies at Peking University to promote the study of Indian culture in China.

While making the announcement, Manmohan Singh also had a discussion in Hindi with Jiang Jainkui, head of the institute, a spokesman for the Indian external affairs ministry said.

The Institute of Indian Studies has been engaged in promoting the use of Hindi and its students had expressed disappointment that the prime minister would not be meeting them during his three-day visit. Not wishing to disappoint them, Manmohan Singh decided to meet Professor Jiang soon after visiting the proposed site of the Olympic Games.
