UN special envoy arrives in Sri Lanka

Colombo, February 20: A top UN official Wednesday arrived in Sri Lanka for a weeklong fact finding mission, foreign ministry officials said.

Angela Kane, UN assistant secretary general for political affairs, is to hold talks with Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama, Foreign Secretary Palitha Kohona and envoys from the European Union, Norway, India and the US and will meet leader of the main opposition Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Kane will also meet leaders of the All Party Representative's Committee (APRC) on the Sri Lanka government's devolution plan to be put forward as a solution to end violence of two decades.

The government last month announced its unilateral pullout from the six-year-old Norwegian-backed ceasefire. The decision has sparked off more violence with over 50 civilians killed in the month of January.
