Bhutan directive to civil servants

August 30

Thimphu: In a bid to ensure that there are no partisan activities in the run-up to Bhutan's first general elections next year, civil servants desiring to join politics have been asked to resign from their jobs by September 30.

The executive order issued by the government said that ministries and agencies should ensure that their employees are not involved in political activities while in service or allow use of public facilities for political activities, except in cases permitted by the Election Commission of Bhutan (ECB).

"Where no conflict of interest is found and processes fulfilled, the government and the ECB will extend full cooperation and support," the order said.

"In ensuring a smooth transition, one very important aspect is the provision of a level-playing field for all political parties and candidates," it said.
