Draft Constitution completed

MALE -- The draft Constitution was completed last Wednesday, the Chairman of the People\'s Special Majlis\' Drafting Committee revealed today.

Ibrahim Ismail, who is also the MP for Male to the Parliament, said that some chapters of the draft Constitution are in the process to be submitted to the interim constitutional assembly. The chapters concern the Presidency, the Cabinet, independent commissions, national security, decentralization and local government, and the clauses relating to these chapters.

\"Currently, we are redrafting the amendments that are sent back to us (the Drafting Committee) by the PSM and incorporating them into the final draft,\" Ibra said today.

While the PSM is marking its 3rd year in existence, out of the 13 chapters of the new draft Constitution, only the Bill of Rights and Bill on Freedoms have been adopted by the PSM. However, even some of the clauses of those chapters have been resubmitted to the Drafting Committee for the Committee to amend them again.
