US may rethink its policy on Afghanistan in new conditions: Tanveer

ISLAMABAD, Aug 13 (APP): Endorsement of grand Pak-Afghan jirga by the United States may be taken as indication that the superpower wants to rethink its policy with regard to Afghanistan, said former Foreign Secretary Tanveer Ahmed Khan.

Talking in a PTV programme late Sunday night he said, the use of force against the Taliban has failed to achieve the desired results and probably other options would be considered in future.

He said collateral damage which occur during the military action against active Taliban result in mustering more public support and sympathy for the movement.

Tanveer said that Afghanistan is an indispensable land bridge between Central, South Asia and rest of the world so peace in that country will open new venues of economic cooperation between the countries in region and the world.

He said as asserted by President General Pervez Musharraf during his address to the grand jirga the restoration of mutual confidence between Pakistan and Afghanistan is imperative for effective cooperation in anti-terrorism efforts.

To a question he said that Taliban can be brought in the process of consultation if a reliable timeframe for the withdrawal of foreign troops is chalked out.
